Quelque chose gratte

— Eh chef, chef ! Chef, j’ai un plan !
Le chef toisa Junior avec méfiance :
— Toi, tu as un plan ?
— Mais chef, ça va me gratter partout !

Octoquill (a French publisher) has launched a challenge running throughout October. The goal is to write a piece of micro-fiction, create a drawing, and/or make a video montage based on a specific theme. There are 31 themes—one for each day of the month. You can find more information HERE (in French).
I have decided to participate in this challenge – at my own pace – and to offer you my texts for free reading. These are raw drafts, proofread and corrected only once or twice, so they are definitely imperfect.

Day 6: Something’s scratching

This short story takes place in the world of « The Stupids », a stupid microbial world I created (details to come).

Something’s scratching

“Hey boss, boss! Boss, I have a plan!”
The boss eyed Junior suspiciously:
“You, have a plan?” Junior scowled. Was it so hard to believe that he—Junior, son of Mr. and Mrs. So-and-So—could come up with an idea that would save them all? After all, hadn’t he demonstrated, not so long ago, just how good and useful his “ideas” could be? For example, the time he borrowed eggs from incubators and threw them at the enemy for the sole purpose of making them stumble with the slime of the larvae, it worked! His plan had been nearly perfect, if you overlooked the fact that he couldn’t return the eggs because they’d all ended up smashed on the battlefield—meaning they’d died before even being born, and he’d wiped out an entire generation of future microbes in the process; aside from those minor, inconsequential details, his plan had been a resounding success!
“Yes, I have a plan, and a great plan…”
The chief turned away to face Junior. He knew that if he didn’t listen, the soldier might well go ahead and carry out his idea—whether it was bad or catastrophic. He sighed; he didn’t want to spare the time—his time was precious—but he had no choice.
“Go ahead, let’s hear it.”
Junior exploded with joy, all unpleasantness already forgotten. He shouted too loudly for the entire tactical team:
“WE’RE GOING TO INFECT THE ENEMIES WITH FLEA! That way, they’ll spend all their time scratching themselves, and we can attack them without them realizing WE’RE HERE!”
Those who had been standing fell flat on their backsides; the others would have done the same had they not already been down. The leader couldn’t even get back up, he was so dumbfounded. In truth, it was a good idea—an excellent one, even! Why hadn’t he thought of it himself?
He didn’t want to admit to Junior that he liked the plan—lest the kid’s already swollen ego get even bigger—so he downplayed it:
“Okay, it might be a decent plan… No need to jump for joy, Junior; I said decent, not excellent! So, let’s see, how do you plan to pull it off?”
Junior was trembling all over with excitement. The leader did not reprimand him; on the contrary, he asked him to elaborate on his plan. It was awesome! Except that he hadn’t thought it through any further… He had no idea how to put it into action. Then he looked at Junior2 who had been scratching himself constantly ever since he had uttered the word flea. A brilliant new idea suddenly struck him.
“We could just send Junior2 on a mission; he’s so infested with bugs he could contaminate all their beds in no time. And if he gets caught, it won’t really be such a big loss.”
Junior flashed a wicked smile at his battle brother. What a brilliant excuse to get rid of him! Honestly, he was on top of his game today!
Junior 2 panicked and instantly stopped scratching—even though it was incredibly hard to do so. The boss wouldn’t sacrifice him, right? Impossible. He swallowed.
The boss eyed the underling; he was seriously considering the question of sending him to the pillory. When the microbe scratched itself again, two fleas escaping from its skull to throw themselves at the innocent soldiers at its side, its decision was made.
“All right, let’s do it. Junior2, you’re leaving right now.”
Junior roared his victory.
“Junior, not so fast. You’re going with your brother, you’ll be his shield.”
Junior’s triumphant momentum came to a sudden halt. How could the boss do this to him?
“But Boss, I’m going to itch all over!”
The boss couldn’t have cared less:
“I know. But a mission is a mission. You surely don’t want to desert now, right after coming up with an idea that actually kind of works?”
Junior scowled and mumbled into his scruffy beard.
“Okay, I’m going.
“Good. See you later, if you come back.”
The chef smiled, satisfied. Either he and his men would win this battle thanks to that dim-witted little squirt, or they’d be rid of two nuisances. Either way, he came out a winner.
